Children’s Hospital Bass Classic
The Children’s Hospital Bass Classic presented by Courtesy Automotive Group was held March 2, 2013 at Doiron’s Landing in Stephensville. There were over 231 fish weighed in and 100 percent were released live back into the waters.
Father and son team from Donaldsonville, Willie Couch II and Willie Couch III, were the big winners with five fish weighing 15.38 pounds, allowing them to pocket the $12,500 first-place purse. Jeff McMorris (Denham Springs) and Beau Fitch (Baton Rouge) claimed 2nd place with five fish weighing in at 14.78 pounds. Kevin Harvey (Bourg) and Chad Harvey (Mandeville) weighed in at 13.67 pounds with only four fish to claim third place.
Ten 4 pound big bass were caught and weighed which made for a very close race for the three Big Bass money prizes. Morgan City anglers Kevin Voisin and Bill McCarty claimed the Big Bass first prize money of $1,250 with a 4.84 pounder. Close behind to claim 2nd place were the tournaments 3rd place winners, Kevin and Chad Harvey, 4.53 pound bass. Third place money went to Ricky Arceneaux (Amelia) and Gary Blanco (Patterson), who brought in a 4.53 bass.
While the field this year was smaller than usual, the average weight of big bass caught was 2.26 pounds, with a total of 521.41 pounds weighed in during the tournament.
Tournament founder and chairman, Gary W. Cross, of Prairieville, was pleased with this year’s tournament and lauded Courtesy Automotive Group for joining the event as presenting sponsor. He gives praise to Cabela’s, the pre-tournament host and donating door prizes for both the pre-tournament and tournament.
Cross also thanked the fishermen for competing in the charity event that benefits Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette and emphasized his appreciation to the dedicated volunteers.
Proceeds from the tournament are used to help Children’s Hospital operate its medical helicopter, transporting children in immediate need of care to its hospital.
Tournament director, Pierre Part’s Brad Rodrigue, said he felt the tournament ran smoothly and went off without issues.
